Screen Doors

Choose the door by the opening, not the name.

The right screen door follows the way you use the entry. A patio slider, a hinged side door and a double-door opening need different solutions. Start with the existing door, the space around it and how often people pass through.

Gilbert Sunscreens offers sliding, swinging and retractable screen-door options for local homes. This overview helps you compare them before moving into the details of the system that suits your opening.

Sliding, swinging or retractable?

Sliding screens move along a track beside a patio door. Swinging screens hinge outward or inward as the opening allows. Retractable screens extend when needed and return into a housing when not in use.

Fit is more than width and height. Handles, jambs, thresholds, nearby walls and the existing door’s movement can affect the screen. A double opening also needs an appropriate meeting or retracting arrangement instead of two unrelated panels.

Consider the way the doorway gets used

A frequently used back door needs convenient operation. A front entry may put more emphasis on appearance when the screen is not in use. A patio opening may need enough mesh coverage to suit both ventilation and sun exposure.

Compare the threshold, latch, opening direction and serviceability of the actual system. Households with pets should discuss scratching and door traffic, but ordinary screen doors should not be relied on to contain animals or children.

  • Check handle and swing clearance with both doors in use.
  • Ask how the mesh, rollers or operating parts can be serviced.
  • Distinguish insect screening from a tested security-door assembly.

Repair the existing screen or change the system

If the frame and operating parts are sound, new mesh may be enough. A bowed slider, worn mechanism or screen that never fitted correctly can make a replacement more useful.

Replacing a patio screen door does not automatically require replacing the glass door. The glass unit and the screen are different assemblies. When your main goal is added entry protection rather than an insect screen, look at the security-door options separately.

Tell us about the existing doorway

You do not need to select a model before requesting an estimate. Describe whether the opening is a slider, a single hinged door or a double opening, and what you want to improve.

  • Explain whether the current screen is missing, damaged or awkward to use.
  • Mention nearby handles, walls or other clearance concerns.
  • Describe priorities such as airflow, appearance, durability or shade.

Helpful answers

Screen Doors
questions.

Which type of screen door is best?

The existing opening and daily use decide the best starting point. Sliding, swinging and retractable screens solve different fit and operation needs.

Can I replace only the screen on a patio door?

Often the screen assembly can be assessed independently from the glass door. Track condition and compatible sizing still need to be checked.

Can a screen be fitted to a double-door opening?

Double openings need a suitable paired or retractable arrangement. Measurements, meeting edges, thresholds and hardware clearance determine the options.

Is a screen-door latch a security lock?

An ordinary screen latch is not equivalent to a tested security-door system. If protection is the priority, compare the actual frame, mesh, locking and anchorage of a security assembly.

Should I choose solar mesh for a screen door?

Compare the sun exposure with your priorities for airflow, light and view. Solar and insect fabrics make different tradeoffs, and the actual door must suit the chosen material.
